Women and Exercise - Supplement Use
Specific Uses for Women
Ones to Avoid |
Some Should Not Be Used
As
far as the nutritional supplements that affect performance
and body composition, most of the available supplements
and formulations offer the same benefits to both men and
women. Besides taking a vitamin
and mineral supplement, the use of protein
supplements, meal
replacements, and various other supplements that are
targeted for fitness, body composition and performance
concerns, are just as useful to women, if not more so,
as they are to men.
There
are some supplements, however, that shouldn't be used
by women. The main ones are those that contain the androgenic
prohormones such as androstenedione, androstenediol, norandrostenedione
and norandrostenediol. These compounds tend to cause significant
elevations in testosterone (the male hormone) in women
and as such may result in masculinizing side effects.
In general it's wise for women to avoid any of the nutritional
ingredients and formulations that are meant to increase
testosterone levels including DHEA.
