Generally,
however, up to the age of about 6 years, nutritional supplements,
other than say a low dose vitamin and mineral supplement used
mainly as nutritional insurance, aren't necessary unless there
are specific medical problems that decrease appetite or absorption
and utilization of food. To this group you could add the occasional
child that is in training or exercises vigorously.
In
these cases some supplements, including meal replacement supplements,
protein powders, antioxidants and essential fatty acids, may
be appropriate.
