TWS: Dietary Protein - Too little dietary protein
With
the possible exception of some women athletes, the average
woman eats insufficient protein every day. This results from
several factors:
- Inadequate
daily calorie intake. Simply, many women don't eat enough
food during the day. By this very fact, their protein intake
is minimal compared to their consumption of other nutrients.
-
Fear of meat. Most women shun eating meat. It is
common for the average woman to eat red meat only once or
twice a week and some type of meat only once a day. The
most universal reason for this is related to their fear
of fat.
-
Exercise increases most nutrient needs. Women who
exercise or have busy lifestyles need increased amounts
of dietary protein.
-
Vegetarian. A diet that excludes meat, such as in
a vegetarian diet, makes it difficult to insure adequate
supply of all amino acids for synthesis of body proteins.
-
Lack of education. Many women don't really know how
much protein they should eat on a daily basis or what foods
contain protein and how much.
Dietary
protein and daily needs for women are discussed in further
detail on the Focus on Women article
page. Updates in this section will point out other fallacies
and symptoms of TWS.
