-- Won World's Fastest Man title (vs. Johnson)

First Canadian since Percy Williams in 1928 to win the Olympic 100 meter sprint.

"You get on the track and you want to be physically prepared and mentally prepared," said Bailey,.

"Over the years, it's been hard to motivate yourself knowing you can run pretty fast. What I've done instead of trying to battle people, I've been battling my body, age, elements, injuries. All of those things."

"My goals are to probably just give back, just be close to the people who were cheering me on when I started.

When Canadian sprinter Donovan Bailey looks back upon his illustrious career, the two gold medals he captured at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics won't be his most cherished memory.

Rather, it will be the mere act of being able to walk again. Bailey, a former world-record holder and Olympic 100-metre champion, announced Friday he will retire following the 2001 outdoor season. The announcement comes nearly three years after the Oakville, Ont., resident suffered a career-threatening Achilles tendon injury that required surgery.

Donovan Bailey has won a lot battles during his career, but even he knows he's now in a fight he can't win. Hobbled by an injury, showing just small flashs of his old form, Bailey posted another small victory Saturday by winning the men's 100 metres at the Canadian track and field championships. It was the fourth and final Canadian title for the Olympic gold medallist and former world record holder, but even he admitted his time of 10.24 seconds was a long ways from his glory days.
