Measuring your Body Fat

What is it?
We all know what body fat is. It's that stuff between our skin and muscles that's supposed to keep us insulated, cushion some of our internal organs, and serve as an emergency energy supply. We know it can be useful stuff but we still don't want too much of it. Too much body fat turns those gentle curves into mounds of cellulite, or if it's internal, can give us the venerable beer belly even if we're tea totalers.

The Different Kinds of Body Fat
Although there are various forms of fat, including brown fat, subcutaneous fat and visceral adipose tissue (VAT), as adults the only two that are important are the VAT and the subcutaneous (under the skin) white fat. VAT fat (the stuff most potbellies are made of) is more sinister than subcutaneous fat since it's been found to correlate with an increased incidence of diabetes and heart disease. Subcutaneous fat, while not necessarily unhealthy unless it's excessive, just looks bad.

The Difference Between Men and Women
Fat is fat. The amount of fat and the distribution vary between men and women. Men tend to have more fat in the midsection, both as subcutaneous and as visceral fat. Women, on the other hand, tend to have more fat in the lower abdomen, buttocks and upper thighs. Women tend to have more problems with cellulite, pockets of fat that tend to accumulate in the buttocks and thighs. In order to get rid of cellulite you have to lose overall body fat. You can't exercise it or roll it or massage it away. There are certain supplements that help get rid of body fat and at the same time cellulite.
